What RTP means
Return to player is a long-run average, published by the studio that made the game. It is genuinely useful and routinely misunderstood as a prediction about your session.
What the number is
RTP is the share of total play value a game returns to players across an enormous number of rounds. A game published at 96.5% returns about 96.5% of everything played through it, measured over millions of rounds rather than your afternoon.
It is a property of the game, set by the studio and usually published in the game's own information panel. It is not set by the platform.
What it does not tell you
Nothing about the next round, and nothing about variance. Two games at identical RTP can behave completely differently: one paying small amounts often, the other almost nothing until it pays a lot. RTP is silent on which you are holding.
It also says nothing about how long a given amount lasts, which is what most people are actually asking when they look it up.
How to use it
As a comparison between games of the same type, over the long run — not as a forecast. A point of RTP is a real difference across thousands of rounds and invisible across fifty.
